On stage, I work in two formats, composed and improvised, and many performances move between them. Some are fully written pieces. Others grow from a shared framework and take shape in the moment. Sometimes I play santur, sometimes electronics, and often both together, with live processing. Around them I bring in other sources of sound and image. In Loom, I processed the sounds of a weaving loom live, alongside video and santur. In a duet with the painter Marzieh Nezamabadi, the sounds of painting became part of the music. I also play with ensembles across traditions, from Persian classical music and Indian tabla to jazz. Whatever the setting, a performance begins the same way, with listening to the material, to the other musicians, and to the moment itself.
